High temperatures can be really annoying, but most of the times we don’t realize how dangerous they might be. Every year more than 600 people die in the United States due to intense heat. It is time to become aware of this and learn manners to keeps us safe when extreme conditions are present.
What Should I Do to Protect Myself from Hot Weather?
- Close all blinds and curtains: This is necessary for preventing your house to overheat. This action will keep the sunlight out, and your house a few degrees lower.
- Wear lightweight clothing: It is highly recommended to use light clothes, specifically, cotton. Whether you are in your house or outside, cotton clothes are the best option for keeping cool.
- Wearing light colors: Doing this maintains your body a little bit cooler, if you can, try not to wear too many black shirts or blouses during the summer.
- Drink water: This one might seem obvious, but even in normal conditions a person might feel ill if it doesn’t drink the necessary amount of water. In hot weather, it is essential to drink at least eight glasses of water a day for our body to be able to sweat and keep its temperature low.
- Stay in the shade: If you have to do something outside during a hot day, it’s advisable to always walk on the side of the sidewalks with the most shade. A person can get serious sunburns in a short time in days of intense heat, and of course, remember to keep yourself hydrated.
- Don’t eat too much at once: When we do this, our body heats up. They demanded work to process large amounts of food increases our body temperature. Instead, eat small portions in a regular way.
- Take a short shower: During a very hot day, taking one or two showers or baths it’s recommended to makes us cooler.
- Avoid some drinks: There are drinks that absorb water from our bodies, like coffee and alcohol, therefore, is smart to avoid them during hot weather.
- Cool your feet: We can take down our temperature if needed, placing our feet inside a bucket of ice.
- Use fans: These circulate air, it can be used even if you have to air-condition in case of intolerable heat.
- Keep water in your freezer: If you need to go outside, keep one plastic bottle of water in your freezer and take it with you.
- Go to places with air-conditioning: If there’s no air-conditioning in your house, try spending some time in the movie theater, or maybe a calm library. Go home when the heat starts to lower down.
- Avoid cooking: Using the oven while it’s 104 degrees Fahrenheit outside it’s not the best idea. Instead, ask for a delivery or put some frozen food in the microwave.
- Park your car in the shade: Don’t expose your vehicle to the sun when you’re driving and need to make a stop while temperatures outside are hot. It can cause you to suffer a heat stroke.
- Put your lotion in the refrigerator: Do this and then apply it in your feet. it’s a short-term way to fight high temperatures.
